Goji berries can protect eyesight as we age

Reading time: 1 minute

Eating goji berries could help keep our eyesight sharp as we get older.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common problem of failing eyesight as we age—affecting around 170 million people around the world—but it can be slowed, and possibly even halted, by eating the berries.

Researchers from the University of California at Davis carried out a small study involving 13 people aged between 45 and 65, who ate 28 grams—equivalent to a handful—of the berries five days a week for 90 days.  The health of their eyes was compared to another group of 14 people who instead were taking supplements for eye health.

By the end of the trial, the density of protective pigments in the eyes of those eating the berries had increased, while those taking the supplements remained the same.

The pigments filter out blue light and provide antioxidant protection.  The pigments act like “sunscreens for the eyes”, researcher Xiang Li said.
