Get that infected tooth sorted—it could prevent diabetes

Reading time: 1 minute

Root canal treatment can do more than just save a tooth—it can also reduce inflammation in the body which could otherwise lead to diabetes, heart disease or even cancer.

Clearing an infection in a tooth improves the body’s abilities to break down sugars, which reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, while also bringing down inflammation.

Researchers at King’s College London assessed the positive impact of root canal treatment on a group of 65 people whose health was tracked for two years afterwards.  They analysed molecules circulating in the patients’ blood to see how the body processes sugar, fats, and its response to infection and treatment.

They said that longterm dental infections allowed bacteria to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation.
