Four ways to make your brain younger

Reading time: 1 minute

What to have a younger brain?  You can have a brain that’s eight years younger than your actual age if you follow a few simple rules.

An ageing brain increases your risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and general cognitive decline—but it’s not inevitable.  We can make our brain younger by making sure we get enough sleep, maintain a strong social network, have an optimistic outlook and learn how to destress.

Researchers discovered that those who followed these simple lifestyle habits had brains that looked eight years younger on MRI scans.

A research team at the University of Florida tracked the brain health of 128 people, most of whom were suffering chronic pain from knee osteoarthritis.  Chronic pain is a common factor in brain ageing, as is low income, poor education and being socially disadvantaged, but the impact of these issues reduces with time, and those who rose above these issues and adopted some of the good habits saw the age of their brain go into reverse.  The age reversal continued during the two years of the study, the researchers found.
