They include turmeric, the spice that gives color and flavour to food, and which has already been recognised as a preventative and treatment of several other cancers, cholecalciferol, a form of vitamin D, resveratrol, found in grapes, berries and red wine, and quercetin, a plant pigment in apples, broccoli and onions.
The compounds regulate histone activity, proteins in cell nuclei that organize DNA and that can also affect the development of several cancers.
Researchers from the Federal University of Sao Paulo in Brazil identified the compounds from a search of medical studies, before testing them in the laboratory on stomach cell samples from healthy people and cancer patients.
