Who’s the most likely to get heart disease? Usually we look at the BMI (body-mass index) or the waist circumference to give us an idea—but the size of the neck could be another tell-tale sign of impending health problems.
Men with a neck circumference of at least 17 inches (43 cm), and women whose necks measure 14 inches (35.5 cm) or greater, face a higher risk of developing a range of health problems, including heart disease and diabetes.
If you have a large neck, don’t panic; it’s just one indicator and there are things you can do about it, say researchers Ahmed Elbediwy and Nadine Wehida. Neck size fluctuates with lifestyle choices: regular cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and good sleep all contribute to better metabolic health and this, in turn, can reduce it, as can eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and pulses.
