It’s one in the eye for cancer: zeaxanthin, a supplement that helps improve eye health, also supercharges our tumour-killing T cells.
The supplement strengthens T-cell receptors, enhances immune signalling, and improves the effects of immunotherapy, researchers from University of Chicago Medical Center found.
Zeaxanthin also slowed cancer in laboratory mice, and it enhanced the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors, a new type of immunotherapy.
As well as being a nutritional supplement, zeaxanthin is also in vegetables like orange peppers, spinach, and kale.
The findings reinforce the importance of a healthy, balanced diet, the researchers say.
