Eating a healthy diet is usually seen as the best way to prevent type 2 diabetes—but researchers have discovered that exercising even two days a week can produce similar benefits.
People who are physically active twice a week have a 30 percent lower rick of developing diabetes than someone who does not exercise at all, and the risk drops by 39 percent if you exercise more frequently.
Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland tracked the health of more than 7,000 men for eight years and, over that time, measured their metabolites—small molecules that are produced as the end stage of metabolic processes, such as the production of oxygen, lactate and glucose.
In all, the researchers measured 1,260 metabolites, of which 192 had a direct impact on the development of diabetes, such as insulin production and sensitivity.
They were surprised to see that exercise improved metabolism in a way that is more commonly seen when people start eating a healthy diet.
