Cialis, the erectile dysfunction drug, dramatically increases the risk of eye problems, including glaucoma.
The drug is also prescribed to men with urinary incontinence because of an enlarged prostate—and the group is 22 percent more likely to develop glaucoma, new research has discovered.
The men are also 32 percent more likely to develop ocular hypertension and had a 33 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma or to start glaucoma treatment over five years.
A BMJ research group analyzed a group of 73,854 men aged 40 or older, half of whom had been prescribed Cialis (tadalafil) or another drug for erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra, for up to five years, and who were compared against the rest of the group that had not used the medication.
