Eating more fish could halve children’s asthma risk

Children who eat more fish—rich in omega-3 fatty acids—are less likely to develop asthma.

The children who ate the most fish were only half as likely of becoming asthmatic as those eating the least amount, researchers from Queen Mary University in London discovered.

But the benefits of fish could also be magnified by a common gene variant that some children carry, and which lowers levels of long chain omega-3 fatty acids in the blood.

The researchers looked at the results of the Children of the 90s study, which was tracking the levels of fish the children were eating when they were seven years old, and the rate of asthma being diagnosed four years later.

“It is possible that a poor diet may increase the risk of developing asthma. While we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, it would be sensible for children to consume more fish, as few currently achieve recommended intake,” said researcher Seif Shaheen.
