Drink one more glass of water a day to boost your health

Reading time: 1 minute

People who drink up to three glasses of water a day eat 205 fewer calories, while their sodium intake drops by up to 235 milligrams, they consume nearly 18 grams less sugar, and decrease their cholesterol consumption by 21 milligrams a day.

Even increasing the amount of water you drink by just one percent will have some health benefits, say researchers at the University of Illinois.

Drinking water from the tap, a cooler, drinking fountain or bottle had the biggest health impacts, although the researchers also took into account liquids from unsweetened black tea, herbal teas and coffee. Overall, the 18,300 adults that participated in the survey were drinking an average of 4.2 cups of water a day, and researchers found a significant difference in the diets of those drinking just one glass a day compared to those drinking more.

But however much you’re drinking, just adding an extra glass a day will make a significant difference to your health, the researchers say.
