Doctors may suggest herbs instead of HRT for the menopause

Reading time: 1 minute

Doctors could be turning to herbal and alternative medicines as a replacement for discredited HRT (hormone replacement therapy) drugs to help women through the menopause, it has been revealed this week.
Around 75 per cent of post-menopausal women already use herbs to treat hot flushes, and so doctors who adopt it in their practice will only be following a trend that was created after HRT was found to cause breast cancer, blood clots, stroke and cardiovascular problems.
Popular alternatives include estrogen-rich soy, red clover and black cohosh herbs. Soy reduces hot flush symptoms by up to 55 per cent, studies have discovered.
Iris Tong from the Women’s Medicine Collaborative in Rhode Island say that herbs have very few side effects, and are safe for women to take as long as they don’t have breast cancer or at high risk for the cancer.
