Diluted manuka honey kills most household bugs

Reading time: 1 minute

Diluting the honey with distilled water makes a natural antiseptic that killed 77 per cent of surface bugs, and was still effective three days after it was applied.

The most effective dilution is one drop of Manuka honey for six of distilled water, say researchers at the University of Southampton. They tested five different dilutions, and even the most diluted – when the solution contained just 3 per cent of the honey – was still effective, killing 35 per cent of the bacteria after 48 hours.

But, not surprisingly, the least diluted solution had the greatest strength and over the longest time, they found.

They tested the effectiveness of Manuka against other types of honey on the ‘stickiness’ of the bacterial biofilm that forms on surfaces.
