Aspartame, the artificial sweetener used in Diet Coke, Snapple drinks and NutraSweet, could cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization.
The WHO is changing its classification of aspartame to ‘a possible carcinogen’ based on the findings of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
The IARC, the WHO’s cancer-research arm, reviews published studies to determine whether a substance could cause cancer.
Aspartame was launched in 1981 and is in Diet Coke, Dr Pepper, some Fanta flavours drinks and other ‘zero’ sodas, as well as in Extra chewing gum and Muller Light yoghurts.
