Covid-19 vaccines are being made available over-the-counter to anyone over the age of 12 who doesn’t qualify for a free booster shot.
The UK is trialling the scheme in 50 pharmacies who will be operating a private vaccination service, costing £99 a shot.
The experimental Pfizer mRNA vaccine is available at 50 outlets of Boots pharmacy, who started the service at the beginning of April.
After the mass vaccination programme at the peak of the Covid epidemic, vaccines have been restricted to those considered to be at high risk of a serious infection, including the over-65s and patients with weakened immune systems.
The new private service will allow people outside of the criteria to get a free booster jab, which means that healthy adults and adolescents can be vaccinated for the first time since the emergency ended in 2021.
Healthy people are extremely unlikely to suffer a serious Covid infection, and the mRNA vaccine has been linked to a range of life-threatening effects among younger people, including myocarditis, or heart inflammation.
