Compulsory vaccine passport vetoed by Europe

Reading time: 2 minutes

A compulsory ‘vaccine passport’ will never happen after the Council of Europe has ruled that vaccinations will not be mandatory in the 27 countries of the European Union.

The council, which monitors human rights, has also told the leaders of the 27 member states that they should be actively telling citizens that vaccination is a matter of choice, even when it comes to the new Covid-19 jabs.

Although the ruling doesn’t mean that some vaccine passport won’t be introduced, it will never be mandatory, and tests that demonstrate whether someone has a Covid infection will always be an option.

The ruling, contained in Resolution 2361 (2021), ‘Covid-19 vaccines: ethical, legal and practical considerations’, calls on all member states to tell citizens that vaccinations are not compulsory, and that nobody should be under any pressure—politically, socially or medically—to be vaccinated. Member states should also not discriminate against anyone who does not have the vaccine, whether for medical or philosophical reasons.

The council also had something to say about moves to make vaccination compulsory for some workers, such as nurses. “Is it really voluntary if you are not allowed to work, send the children to school, travel or even visit the mall?” the council asks.

It also designates the Covid jabs as “experimental”, as they have yet to pass their Phase III safety trials. As such, they fall foul of the Nuremberg Convention, which forbids the use of experimental medical procedures on the public “where there is a reason to believe that death or disabling injury will occur.” Many thousands of serious reactions and deaths have been reported to vaccine monitoring groups around the world.

Although council resolutions are not legally binding, it is rare for member states to ignore them. (Source: European Parliamentary Assembly: https://pace.coe.int/en/files/29004/html)
