The number of complaints against UK doctors has more than doubled in five years. The General Medical Council (GMC), which regulates the conduct of doctors, says it received 10,347 complaints from patients in 2012 compared to 5,168 in 2007.
The majority of complains concerned a failure in clinical practice, although there has been a growing trend in those relating to the doctor-patient relationship.
The University of Plymouth, which analysed the increase, reckons it is caused by a complex series of issues, although a sudden fall in medical standards is probably not one of them. Instead, people are taking a more direct responsibility for their health, are better informed and are not showing the same deference to doctors.
