Chocolate and red wine is good—in moderation

Eating chocolate and drinking red wine may be good for us—but you can have too much of a good thing.

Having a little of what we fancy is better for us than having more.  Any benefits from consuming food and drink that are rich in procyanidins, a class of polyphenols, are reversed when we have too much.

Researchers at the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Japan have demonstrated that the benefits are more like a U-shaped curve than a continuing upward line.  This means that all the benefits are in the first glass of wine and are countered by the time we’re drinking the third.
