Childhood trauma reduces chances of conceiving

Reading time: 1 minute

Having trouble conceiving? The problem might not be biological-it could be caused by the stress and abuse you suffered as a child, new research suggests.

Women have a far harder time conceiving if they were abused or neglected when they were children, or if they had parents who were alcoholics or drug addicts, researchers from the University of Sydney have discovered.

They looked at the psychological profiles of 774 women, and matched their menstrual cycles and fertility to adverse childhood experiences. Those who had suffered a bad childhood were more likely to have problems conceiving, and also experienced abnormal menstrual cycles, often missing a period for up to three months.
