Check your eye drops—they could contain a superbug

Reading time: 1 minute

If you’re using eye drops, check the label—it could be contaminated with a ‘superbug’.

Batches of AaCarb, Aacomer and Puroptics drops—all manufactured by Indiana Ophthalmics in India—contain an antibiotic-resistant bug that could be lethal in someone who is immuno-compromised.

One person in the UK has died after using the drops, and around 50 more have suffered serious infections.

The contamination was noticed last autumn and most batches that were being sold in pharmacies and online have been recalled, says the UK’s Health Security Agency (UKHSA).  But people who bought the drops around that time, and still have them on their bathroom shelf, should check the label.

Ironically, most infections happened in hospitals where patients were given the drops to treat dry eye.
