Canola is the oil for diabetes

Reading time: 1 minute

Canola should be the oil of choice for people suffering from type 2 diabetes, the ‘lifestyle disease’, say researchers. Foods-such as bread-that include the oil should also be an important part of the diet.

Diabetics can reduce their risk of heart disease by 7 per cent by taking the oil regularly, and that’s the same benefit they would get from taking an additional cholesterol-lowering statin drug, say Canadian researchers.

They made the discovery when they put 141 diabetics on a low-glycaemic index diet that included bread that contained canola oil or a whole wheat diet known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

It’s the first time the low-glycaemic diet has been tested when canola oil has been added to the mix.

The oil was developed from rapeseed oil in the 1970s, and contains just 7 per cent saturated fat, which is around half the amount in olive oil.
