Bugs pinpointed as cause of IBS

Reading time: 1 minute

Stomach bugs could be responsible for many chronic diseases that perplex doctors – and the bugs are almost certainly the cause of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).
Researchers now believe that bacteria are the cause of IBS and its many distressing conditions – and they could be the result of food poisoning.
IBS sufferers have bacterial overgrowth in their small intestine, say researchers from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. They made the discovery when they analysed the small intestines of 320 IBS patients; 37 per cent had bacterial overgrowth compared to less than 10 per cent of healthy controls.
In a separate study, researchers believe that the bugs causing the IBS could be getting into the small intestine following a bout of food poisoning
