Broccoli helps new ‘wonder’ drug beat cancer

Reading time: 1 minute

Researchers testing a new anti-cancer drug made a surprise discovery (for them) – vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower are better cancer fighters than the drug. The researchers from Heidelberg University Hospital made the discovery while they were testing the new ‘wonder drug’ sorafenib, designed to combat pancreatic cancer. In animal tests, the drug was effective for around four weeks; after that time, new cancer cells started to develop that did not respond to the drug. However, when the mice were fed cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower, the drug continued to be effective. The vegetables are rich in sulforaphane, an anti-cancer agent. In fact, the researchers said, the vegetables seemed to be able to break the cancer-causing sequence in stem cells on their own. (Source: Cancer Research, 2010; 70: 5004).
