Banned doctors finding work in other European countries

Doctors banned in one European country are finding work in another, a BMJ investigation has discovered.

Four French doctors barred from practising in France obtained licences in Belgium, including a 65-year-old cardiologist, who had been convicted in 2024 of sexually assaulting his patients.

The Brussels based Iris Hospitals South that hired him said it was not aware he had a criminal record until it was contacted by journalists.

The hospital group said it had followed procedures by checking the practitioner’s licence with Belgium’s Federal Public Service for Health and the Order of Physicians.
