Older people are encouraged to take an aspirin a day to ward off heart problems. But a report by WDDTY revealed the drug is an unsuspected cause of stroke in the elderly-and now a new report reveals it can cause eye problems and even blindness.
Aspirin causes age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common problem in the elderly, as its name suggests, and one that can lead to blindness. The risk increases the longer you take aspirin, and those who have taken the drug regularly for 10 years or longer are at the highest risk, researchers from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine have discovered.
Regular users face double the risk of AMD compared to someone who doesn’t take the drug, the researchers discovered after they analysed the health profiles of 4,926 regular aspirin users over a 20-year period.
