Antioxidant reverses liver damage caused by alcohol

Reading time: 1 minute

If you like a drink – but are worried about the effects that alcohol can have on the liver – there’s an antioxidant that could repair the damage.
Ubiquinone, or MitoQ, is an antioxidant that can repair the damage caused to the liver by excessive alcohol, and can even reverse steatosis, a condition that often leads to cirrhosis and even cancer.
Up to 90 per cent of all cases of cirrhosis and 30 per cent of liver cancers are caused by alcohol and especially alcohol abuse where people are drinking excessively every day.
In a laboratory test using mice, researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham discovered that MitoQ reversed alcohol-induced liver damage. Specifically, it interrupted the cascade effect that begins when excessive alcohol metabolizes in the liver and creates free radicals that damage the liver cells, and which eventually cause fatty deposits to develop.
