More bad news about taking antidepressants while pregnant: not only can they increase the risk of autism in the child, as was reported last week, they could also create a predisposition for type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Prozac (fluoxetine)-probably the best-known of the antidepressants-has been associated with the diabetes risk by researchers from McMaster University. The drug, which is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), increases the possibility of ‘metabolic disturbance’ in the child; this, in turn, increases the risk for diseases such as autism and diabetes.
The drugs also caused increased fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver of the offspring, which became apparent when he or she reached adulthood.
Around 20 per cent of women in the US are prescribed an antidepressant while pregnant.
