An avocado for breakfast reduces your heart disease risk

Reading time: 1 minute

If you’re seriously overweight, start eating an avocado with your breakfast each morning—it could help reduce your risk of heart disease.

The fruit reduces the risk by a modest 4 percent, but that could still prove significant, say researchers from Penn State University.

They studied the effects of the fruit on 786 obese adults, whose waist circumference was greater than 40 inches in the men and 35 inches in women.  Half of them were given an avocado every day for six months, and the researchers estimate that this one change lowered the heart disease risk by 4 percent.

A major shift to a heathier diet can reduce the risk by as much as 30 percent, but just eating an avocado is one step in the right direction, the researchers say.
