Acupuncture eases low back pain during pregnancy

Reading time: 1 minute

Acupuncture can dramatically ease low back pain in pregnant women, a new study has discovered.

The therapy is also safe and didn’t affect the pregnancy or the health of the unborn child, say researchers from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.

The researchers assessed the results from 10 studies that had used acupuncture on 1040 women while they were pregnant.

Acupuncture not only relieved low back pain and pelvic pain, but it also helped women cope better during the day and improved their quality of life.

It more than halved levels of pain the women were experiencing and improved their ability to function and move around.

The researchers say their analysis was one of the first to examine the safety of acupuncture during pregnancy.  All the babies were born healthy, although preterm contractions were noted in two of the studies.
