A cup of tea helps keep you sharp (and changes your brain)

Reading time: 1 minute

Brain structures of tea drinkers are physically different from non-tea drinkers, and this improves their ability to remember and carry out mental tasks.

People who drink at least four cups of tea – and it can be green, black or oolong – every week will have more efficient brains after 25 years, researchers from the National University of Singapore have discovered.

Earlier studies have confirmed that drinking tea every day halves the chances of cognitive decline in older people – and the new research suggests why this is. The researchers used MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to examine the brains of 36 people aged 60 and older and discovered that the brains of the regular tea drinkers had more efficient connections.

“When the connections between brain regions are more structured, information processing can be performed more efficiently,” explained researcher Feng Lei.
