A third of all cases of Alzheimer’s disease are preventable. Just by exercising, not smoking or finding ways of countering depression could mean you don’t become a victim in old age, a new study has found.
Many cases are linked to poor lifestyle, say researchers from King’s College London, which could be modified and so remove the risk.
Each of seven risk factors identified by the researchers carries a 10 per cent increased risk for Alzheimer’s. These include:
o Diabetes
o Mid-life hypertension (high blood pressure)
o Mid-life obesity
o Physical inactivity
o Depression
o Smoking
o Poor education
Even taking more physical exercise could have several positive knock-on effects, such as reducing obesity, hypertension and diabetes, says one of the researchers, Prof Carol Brayne.
Earlier research suggested that up to a half of all Alzheimer’s cases were related to a poor lifestyle.
