Can we really strengthen our immune system to protect ourselves against winter illness?

Reading time: 3 minutes

ADVERTORIAL CONTENT

Whatever the season, our immune systems can be compromised, making us more vulnerable to infections, but the winter months seem to be worse for many of us suffering from a number of unpleasant symptoms from a very long list: cough, fever, chills, fatigue, headache, nasal congestion, muscle or body aches, vomiting and diarrhoea. Recent studies show that cold temperatures can lead to a decline in the immune response. Couple that with us spending more time inside when it’s colder and it is the perfect recipe for winter illnesses to pass around quickly and easily.

But did you know we are always ‘at risk’?  In fact, every year we must deal with over 200 types of cold and flu-like viruses responsible for all these symptoms.  Normally an efficient immune system protects us from these infections, mainly thanks to the antibodies and special ‘soldier-cells’.  Our antibodies attack viruses directly and neutralise them – however some winter viruses like flu are very aggressive and smart and can bypass our immune defences by changing their form and hiding from our antibodies.  So our ‘soldier cells’ are a super important part of our immune system because they do not attack viruses directly, but rather the infected cells, therefore blocking the virus spreading.

Our immune system works hard to recognise and identify an infection or injury to the body, triggering an immune response when necessary with the goal of restoring normal function.  Contrary to popular belief we don’t actually need to boost our immune systems we just want it to be balanced – too much of an immune response (think of examples such as eczema or hayfever etc.) can be as bad as too little (think ongoing colds and viruses that are difficult to shake off).

To function properly, our bodies need a range of macronutrients and micronutrients, which are found across various food groups. And we can get the vitamins we need to keep our immune systems healthy, like vitamin C and Zinc, from a diverse diet including fatty fish, meat, vegetables and fruit. In general, healthy eating incorporates lots of starchy carbohydrates and different fruits and vegetables, as well as smaller amounts of protein and low-fat dairy.

Maintaining a diet like this should mean that you get all the nutrients you need, which in turn will support your immune system. Supplements are recommended when it is not possible to get all the required nutrients from diet alone.  There is also a strong link between sleep and a healthy immune system – but not just any sleep will do.  Restorative sleep which means enough sleep to get the body back into fighting shape is key.

So whilst a healthy diet and sleep can help maintain our immune system, the big question is whether we can strengthen our immune system, to help it do its job, when we are under attack and at risk of winter illness, or when we have early signs of symptoms. And the answer is yes with GUNA®-COMPLEX n.1

GUNA®-COMPLEX n.1 includes the anti-viral and anti-inflammatory qualities of aconitum, echinacea and Vincetoxicum, welcome additions for those looking for an innovative and natural way to support their immune system.

An original and innovative formula, marketed in 40 countries worldwide and trusted by millions as Guna-Flu, studies have shown that Guna®-Complex n.1 may help to strengthen the body’s natural defences.1,2.

The immunostimulant action of its main component (Anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum 7CH)1 is supported by the presence of 2 other remedies (Haemophilus influenza 9CH and Vincetoxicum 5CH) which has shown in trials to be effective when used during early signs of symptom onset.

Guna®-Complex n.1 contains four other “symptomatic” remedies which are documented to work together to ensure a quick resolution of the inflammatory processes affecting the upper, middle and lower respiratory tracts – possible entry portals for the winter illnesses:1,2

  • Aconitum napellus 5CH
  • Belladonna 5CH
  • Cuprum 3CH

The instructions for use are very simple. In the acute phase of illness (early onset of symptoms) melt the content of one tube under the tongue, every 6 hours, up to 3 times per day, until symptoms improve. Take on an empty stomach.

Guna®-Complex n.1 is safe for use in children (2+ years), adults and elderly people. RRP £15.44
