Watermelon protects the heart

Reading time: 1 minute

Watermelon is a great summer fruit—and it could provide an unexpected nutritional boost.

People who often eat the fruit tend to have higher-quality diets packed with more vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, and watermelon juice may help protect blood vessel function and support heart health.

Watermelon provides an impressive mix of nutrients, antioxidants, and naturally occurring compounds linked to cardiovascular and metabolic health, say researchers from Louisiana State University.

They focused on two naturally occurring watermelon compounds, L-citrulline and L-arginine, which help with nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax and expand, an important part of healthy circulation and cardiovascular function.
