Not too hot, not too cold. What’s the ideal temperature in your bedroom to improve your chances of a good night’s sleep?
Apparently, the sweet spot is 75 degrees F (24 degrees C)—and that’s especially true if you’re 65 or older; it reduces stress and helps the heart work more efficiently, and these combine to help improve sleep quality.
Researchers from Griffith University in Australia tested the sleep quality of a group of older volunteers to discover how the bedroom temperature affected their sleep.
Lead researcher Fergus O’Connor explained: “When the human body is exposed to heat, its normal physiological response is to increase the heart rate. The heart is working harder to try and circulate blood to the skin surface for cooling. However, when the heart works harder and for longer, it creates stress and limits our capacity to recover from the previous day’s heat exposure.”
Getting the right temperature in the bedroom becomes increasingly important with global warming and warmer days and nights in the summer, he said.
The ideal daytime temperature in the home is 26 degree C (79 degrees F)—but there was no guidance about night-time temperature, until now at least.
