Doctors still prescribe ‘chemical cosh’ drugs despite the warnings

Doctors are ignoring all the red flags and continue to prescribe dangerous ‘chemical cosh’ drugs to dementia patients.

Around 25 percent of all dementia patients are still being given one of the powerful drugs that cause confusion and increase the risk of falls.

Although the use of the drugs has dropped dramatically after numerous health warnings, around 25 percent of people with dementia and cognitive decline are still being given antidepressants with strong anticholinergic properties that control incontinence and irregular heart rate, antipsychotics, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics.

Researchers from University of California’s Los Angeles Health Sciences were shocked to discover that the drugs were still being widely used, even though safer remedies were available.
