Suffering from a persistent nail infection? As you’ve probably discovered, most remedies don’t seem to work very well—but hydrogen sulphite just might.
Hydrogen sulphite remedies traditionally target gut problems, but researchers at the University of Bath reckon they could reverse persistent nail infection.
Most topical creams can’t penetrate the nail, but hydrogen sulphite does so easily, and its powerful antimicrobial abilities kill a broad spectrum of pathogens, including fungal species that do not respond well to common antifungal medications.
As most nail infections are fungal, hydrogen sulphite could be the remedy to try, the researchers say. Although it’s a naturally occurring gas best known for its strong rotten egg odour, the levels needed to treat nail infection are so low that you probably wouldn’t detect any bad smell.
