Not sleeping? Eat more fruit and vegetables—and you could see a difference that night.
The diet also improves sleep quality by around 16 percent, say researchers from the University of Chicago Medical Center.
They logged the diets and sleep patterns of a small group of healthy volunteers and discovered that daily eating habits were strongly connected to how well they slept that night. Those who ate more fruits and vegetables, and consumed more complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, experienced longer periods of deep, undisturbed sleep.
Even meeting the minimum consumption of fruits and vegetables—America’s health regulators recommend five cups of fruits and vegetables per day—could create an average 16 percent improvement in sleep quality compared with those who didn’t eat any fruit or vegetables that day.
