Our lifestyle determines when menopause starts. Typically, it begins any time between the ages of 48 and 52—but taking supplements, and especially the omega-3 fish oils, delays it, while eating red meat and smoking accelerates its start.
Researchers from the University of Leeds analysed data on 3,566 women taking part in the UK Women’s Cohort Study and found that women who were regularly supplementing with fish oils—and also vitamins B and C—had a later menopause.
Conversely, women who were overweight, smoked, or ate a lot of red meat tended to have an earlier menopause.
Having a later menopause matters. Women whose menopause begins before they are 45 are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and premature death. Fish oils reduce the risk of early menopause by up to 95 percent, the researchers concluded.
