Want to live longer? Then eat your breakfast earlier.
A late breakfast can also increase the chances of fatigue, depression and poor sleep, say researchers from Mass General Bingham.
As people get older, their eating habits can change and can be eating breakfast and the final meal of the day later. But this reduces the ‘eating window’ and may not give the body enough time to properly digest the meals, the researchers say.
They analyzed data, including blood samples, from 2,945 community-dwelling adults in the UK aged between 42 and 94, who were tracked for more than 20 years. As they aged, so their eating habits tended to change, and they would eat breakfast later in the day.
The researchers found that those who were eating later were also more likely to die before those who stuck to the hours they ate when they were younger, and they were also more liable to suffer from depression and fatigue.
A later eating schedule may not directly cause the health problems—but it could be a signal of general decline that makes these issues more likely.
