If you crave a snack before heading to bed, make sure it’s a handful of pistachios.
The nuts help improve our gut microbiome, and they do their good work while we sleep, say researchers from Penn State University.
The midnight snack could be especially beneficial for prediabetics who are told to eat a carbohydrate snack, such as some toast, before they go to bed. It’s supposed to regulate blood glucose levels when they sleep and wake up.
But in a three-month study with 51 people with prediabetes, the researchers found that eating two ounces of pistachios last thing promoted ‘good’ bacteria, such as Roseburia and members of the Lachnospiraceae family, in the gut.
