Our skin naturally starts to thin as we get older—but vitamin C reprograms our DNA to thicken it, new research has discovered. It directly activates genes that control skin cell growth and development.
Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology found that the vitamin was reversing skin thinning within 14 days.
Using models of human skin, the researchers exposed the samples to air while nourishing them from beneath by a liquid that included vitamin C, so replicating the way our skin gets nutrients from blood vessels.
The researchers applied amounts of vitamin C that were equivalent to someone who has a diet rich in vitamin C and who may also be supplementing.
They found that the vitamin helps skin cells grow by reactivating genes associated with cell proliferation. It removes methyl from DNA, in a process known as DNA demethylation. When DNA is methylated, gene activity is suppressed. DNA methylation is a common factor in ageing and can also be caused by a poor diet and environmental pollutants.
