Mindful eating—chewing more slowly and savouring smaller bites—could help you lose weight.
It’s simple enough: eat less and you’ll put on less weight, say researchers at Fujita Health University in Japan.
They tested the theory on 33 volunteers, aged 20 to 65 years, who were asked to eat slices of pizza under different conditions. Researchers measured meal duration, number of chews, number of bites, and the rate or speed of chewing, noting how these variables changed when participants were exposed to different metronome rhythms using headphones.
Instead of just focusing on the food we eat, creating an environment that encourages slower eating and fewer bite sizes could be an approach that’s just as effective, the researchers say.
