Eat more fatty acids to reduce your cancer risk

Reading time: 1 minute

We really need to be consuming more omega-3 oils—whether it’s from fish, nuts or as supplements.

It’s already known that the fatty acids keep the cardiovascular system healthy, but researchers have now discovered they protect against cancer.

Researchers from the University of Georgia reckon they reduce the chances of 14 different cancers, including colon, stomach, brain, malignant melanoma and bladder—and their protective effects are magnified if we are also consuming omega-6 fatty acids, usually found in nuts.

Their research turns on its head earlier studies that had even suggested the acids are carcinogens.  When they studied the health, and fatty acid intake, of around 250,000 people, the researchers found omega-3 and omega-6 protected people against cancer, although very high amounts slightly increased the risk of prostate cancer.  But for women, there was no unsafe amount they could consume.
