AI beats doctors to reduce death in the wards

An AI (artificial intelligence) system has reduced the rate of unexpected death in a hospital ward by up to 26 percent.

The ChartWatch AI system, which has been used at Unity Health Toronto, has outperformed doctors in detecting early warning signs of a patient’s sudden deterioration.

It has been used in a general ward, where it monitored over 4,000 patients for 19 months.  In that time, 482 patients became high-risk, but the condition of 1,656 patients who had standard, non-AI care became critical.  There were also 1.6 percent deaths in the AI group compared to 2.1 percent in the general group.

ChartWatch inputs more than a hundred aspects of a patient’s medical history and current health status that are routinely stored in the hospital’s electronic medical record. It analyzes the interactions between these inputs and how they change over time. With that information, it’s able to categorize each patient by their risk for deterioration and send an alert to prioritize treatment.
