Matcha tea can keep gum disease at bay.
It can combat the bacteria in the mouth that can cause periodontitis, an inflammatory gum disease that can cause tooth loss, and even diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and cancer.
In laboratory tests, the tea extract had killed most of the P. gingivalis bacteria that causes periodontitis, and the entire culture was dead within four hours.
Researchers from Nihon University Hospital School of Dentistry in Japan tested three different mouthwashes on 45 volunteers with chronic periodontitis; 15 were given the matcha extract, and the others were either given a barley tea mouthwash or a standard mouthwash designed to reduce inflammation.
Only those who used the matcha mouthwash showed a ‘significant’ reduction in P. gingivalis levels, the researchers said.
Matcha is a finely-ground green tea powder made from the Camellia sinensis green tea plant and other studies have shown that it can also reduce viral and fungi infections.
