We’ve all heard about the essential nutrients—but spare a thought for two ‘unessential’ ones that support our nervous system.
Serine and glycine are amino acids that are very essential for diabetics, who are more likely to suffer from nerve damage in the hands and feet, which results in weakness, numbness and pain.
Diabetics who are low in serine are especially at risk because it forces the body to use a different amino acid that eventually causes peripheral neuropathy.
Researchers at the Salk Institute have been using mice to track the way serine deficiency causes nerve damage.
Serine deficiency can also lead to blindness and it’s being tested as an Alzheimer’s preventative.
Serine-rich foods include soybeans, nuts, eggs, chickpeas, lentils, meat and fish.
