People who regularly drink alcohol are far less likely to suffer from any type of arthritis, a new study has discovered. Alcoholic drinks seem to have anti-inflammatory qualities that protect against arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and spondylarthropathy. It is most effective against rheumatoid arthritis, where the risk was lowered by between 30 and 99 per cent. The research team, from Leiden University in the Netherlands, was quick to point out that a moderate intake of alcohol was sufficient to lower the risk.
