First we discovered that the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol isn’t so bad after all (see: http://www.wddty.com/a-high-fat-lie.html), and now it seems the ‘good’ HDL variety won’t lower your risk of a heart attack.
The good versus bad cholesterol model is one of the cornerstones of medicine, and launched the multi-billion pound statin drug industry. The drugs are designed to lower artery-clogging LDL (low-density lipoprotein) fats while raising levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein).
But new research at Harvard Medical School has found that high HDL levels don’t reduce the risk of heart problems.
Earlier research has established that LDL cholesterol becomes increasingly important as we get older, and helps protect the brain from memory-loss and dementia.
