Risk of dementia has fallen in past 20 years

Reading time: 1 minute

Good news-you’re far less likely to develop dementia than you would have been 20 years ago. Better diets, less smoking and improved heart health have all helped to reduce the risk dramatically.
Although people seem to think that the risk of dementia is increasing, researchers have discovered that the very opposite is true: the risk has fallen significantly since 1987.
Researchers from Stockholm University reckon the risk has fallen in line with a fall in the rate of cardiovascular disease, which they say is directly related to dementia. Dementia is characterized by memory loss and impaired cognitive abilities, often brought on by poor vascular and heart health.
However, the actual number of people of people developing dementia is increasing, especially among the over-75s, because of the general ageing population.
