Men with prostate cancer can reduce the risk of the cancer recurring if they eat a low-fat diet and take fish oil supplements. The diet slows the growth of prostate cancer cells compared to a standard high-fat Western diet, say researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles. Men who start the diet six weeks before surgery are far less likely to see the cancer recur. The diet and the supplements together lower levels of inflammatory substances in the blood that are a precursor to cancer growth and recurrence. They may also make the cancer less aggressive. Researchers saw a difference in the inflammatory levels in the men in just six weeks after they adopted the new diet. They had increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids from the fish oil supplements and decreased levels of the inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids.
