Aspirin is supposed to be part of everyone’s health regimen as a simple way to prevent cardiovascular disease-and yet 20 per cent of people don’t know that they are resistant to the drug and are at high risk of suffering a heart attack.
The extent of aspirin-resistance surprised researchers who discovered in a recent study that one in five-or 20 per cent-of people are affected; around 41 per cent of those suffer a heart attack as a result, and the attack is fatal in 6 per cent of them.
This suggests that around 16 million in the UK alone are aspirin-resistant. If all were taking the drug, around 6.5 million would suffer a heart attack and around 380,000 of these would die as a result.
Scientists at biotech company Randox have developed a simple urine test that tells doctors if the patient is aspirin-resistant. It’s been trialled at St George’s Hospital in London, and doctors there suggest that every patient should be given the test before they start taking aspirin.
